What Singapore Googled, year by year

A football tournament was Singapore's top Google search in 4 of the 9 years Google published a list. An iPhone made the top 10 in 6 of them, and sport made it in every one. Pick a year, 2016 to 2025, to see Google's top 10 searches for Singapore.

Pick a year

Google says these lists show the searches that grew the most compared with the year before, not the ones searched most overall. Google did not publish an overall list for 2023.

Sport made the top 10 in all 9 years. A football tournament was #1 in 2016, 2018, 2021 and 2024. An iPhone made it in 6 years (2016, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2025). 2023 has no list, so it is left out of every count.

What kind of search was it?

We put each of the 90 searches into one of 9 types, going by its name. A longer bar means more of the 90. The sorting is ours, not Google's.

The short version

A football tournament was Singapore's top Google search in 4 of the 9 years Google published a list. An iPhone made the top 10 in 6 of them, and sport made it in every one.

What we did. We opened Google Year in Search for Singapore, one page for each year from 2016 to 2025, and wrote down the overall top 10 list on each. That is 90 searches from 9 years. 2023 has no overall list on Google's page, so it stays empty. We then sorted each search into one of 9 types by its name, and counted which kinds of search came back.

What we found. The #1 search was Euro 2016 (2016), Sgpokemap (2017), World Cup (2018), Singapore Haze (2019), US Election 2020 (2020), UEFA Euro 2021 (2021), Wordle (2022), UEFA Euro 2024 (2024) and DeepSeek (2025). A football tournament was #1 in 2016, 2018, 2021 and 2024, and sport was in the top 10 in all 9 lists. An iPhone made the top 10 in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2025. A US election was in the top 3 in 2016, 2020 and 2024. COVID-19 searches were in the lists for 2020, 2021 and 2022. A voucher first appeared in 2022 and was there again in 2024 and 2025.

What to keep in mind. Google ranks by how much a search grew compared with the year before, not by how many people searched, so a list shows what jumped. The type of each search is our sorting. A search being on a list says nothing about why people looked it up.

Questions people ask

What was the top Google search in Singapore each year?

By Google Year in Search: 2016 Euro 2016; 2017 Sgpokemap; 2018 World Cup; 2019 Singapore Haze; 2020 US Election 2020; 2021 UEFA Euro 2021; 2022 Wordle; 2023 not published; 2024 UEFA Euro 2024; 2025 DeepSeek. Google did not publish an overall list for 2023.

What was the top Google search in Singapore in 2025?

DeepSeek, then Charlie Kirk, Mortgage quote, COPD treatment and Osteoporosis treatment. SG60 voucher was sixth, iPhone 17 seventh, Barbie Hsu eighth, Donald Trump ninth and Asia Cup 2025 tenth.

Are these the things Singapore searched for the most?

Not quite. Google says its Year in Search lists show the searches that grew the most compared with the year before, not the ones searched most overall. A search that is big every year, like the weather, can stay off the list because it did not jump.

Why is there no list for 2023?

Google's 2023 page for Singapore shows only lists by category, such as Singapore news and how-tos, and no overall top 10. We did not fill the gap from another source, so 2023 is left out of every count.

Did a football tournament really top the list that often?

Yes, in 4 of the 9 years: 2016, 2018, 2021 and 2024. The #1 searches were Euro 2016, World Cup, UEFA Euro 2021 and UEFA Euro 2024.

Which years had an iPhone in the top 10?

2016, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2025: 6 of the 9 years. The models were iPhone 7 (2016), iPhone 8 (2017), iPhone X (2017), iPhone 11 (2019), iPhone 13 (2021), iPhone 14 (2022), iPhone 17 (2025). In 2017 two iPhones made the top 3, the iPhone 8 at #2 and the iPhone X at #3.

Which year had the most sport?

2021, with 5 of the 10 searches about sport (UEFA Euro 2021, NBA League, IPL 2021, English Premier League and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games). Sport was in the top 10 in all 9 years, from just 1 in 2022 and 2025 up to 5 in 2021.

When did vouchers start to show up?

In 2022, with GST Voucher 2022 at #9. After that came CDC Vouchers at #5 in 2024 and SG60 voucher at #6 in 2025. No voucher is in the lists for 2016 to 2021.

Is the 2024 list for Singapore?

Google's 2024 address is the Singapore one (year-in-search/2024/sg), but the list on the page is not labelled as Singapore's. Time Out Singapore lists the same top three for Singapore, so we use it.

How do you sort the searches into types?

By the name of the search, into 9 types: Sport, Phones, Film, TV and music, News and world, Apps and games, Money and vouchers, Health, Shopping and Travel. The sorting is ours, not Google's. Some are judgement calls: Coronavirus and COVID-19 are under Health, people are under the field they are known for, and royal and election news is under News and world.

The boring bit

Where the data comes from

Google Year in Search for Singapore (Google Trends), one page for each year, read on 14 Oct 2026. On each page we took the overall list of ten searches, in the order Google shows them. The pages are called different things by year, and we used the overall list each time:

What is not claimed

  • These are not the most searched words. Google says the lists are the searches that grew the most compared with the year before, so a search that is big every year can be missing.
  • We do not say why a search was on a list, or what any of them meant. The names are as Google writes them, with its spelling.
  • 2023 has no overall list on Google's page for Singapore, only lists by category. We did not borrow a ranking from anywhere else, so 2023 is left out of every count. The counts are out of 9 years, not 10.
  • For 2017, Google's page lists Sgpokemap first. One news site named Pokemon Go as #1. We use Google's page.
  • Google's 2016 page calls its list "Top Searches in 2016". Later pages say "Trending Searches" or "Searches". We treat them all as the overall list for the year. The 2024 page does not label its list as Singapore's, although the address is the Singapore one.
  • The types are our sorting, by name, into 9 groups. Some are judgement calls: Coronavirus and COVID-19 are under Health, people are under the field they are known for (Kobe Bryant under Sport, Stan Lee, Taylor Swift, Liam Payne and Barbie Hsu under Film, TV and music), and election and royal news is under News and world. A different sorting would move some counts.
  • "Kind of search" rows (football tournament, iPhone, US election, COVID-19, voucher) are matched by the words in the name, as listed under the table above.
  • We did not look at search volume, search terms behind a name, or any other country.

What could make it wrong: a name copied wrongly from Google's page, a list that Google changed after we read it, or a search sorted into a type you would not choose. As a check, the script recounts the totals (90 searches in 9 lists) and the sport, football, iPhone, US election and voucher counts printed on this page.

No machine learning was needed. The question was "what was on the list, and what came back", which counting answers directly.
